Yesterday’s China Pavilion in Expo, Today’s Chinese Arts Palace

    As a cradle of Chinese modern fine arts, Shanghai has gathered millions of artworks of various kinds, and fine arts agencies at municipal level alone have a collection of 30 thousand pieces, most of which have been kept in storage for years. The occurrence of Chinese Arts Palace will bring Shanghai citizens and all those living in Shanghai to feel more vividly about the artistic development and atmosphere in Shanghai. In October this year, Shanghai Arts Museum, with a history of 60 years, will be moved to China Pavilion in the Expo, and the latter that has witnessed the Chinese glory in the Expo will become Chinese Arts Palace.

    As Shi Dawei, vice president of China Artists Association and president of Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, introduced to us, the opening exhibition will be divided into two sections in the light of architectural structure of China Pavilion.Rising Moon above Sea—Origin of Chinese Modern Arts Exhibition will be established as a permanent one while a special hall is reserved for multi-media version ofScenery at Riverside in Qingming FestivalandImmortals’ Congratulations on Birthdayby Ren Bonian. The exhibition titledRising Moon above Sea—Origin of Chinese Modern Arts in Chinese Arts Palace will involve approximately 1200 artworks at one time, which will be the first permanent exhibition to showcase an entire historic evolution of Shanghai and even Chinese modern fine arts with its pioneering importance in China. As one of the most attractive exhibits in Shanghai Expo, the multi-media version ofScenery at Riverside in Qingming Festivalwill be still available, plus with other excellent modern Chinese artworks.
