The Musical A Little Princess made its debut at the China National Theatre for Children (CNTC) during the New Year season. The play was adapted from the name-sake novel by the famous U.S. author Frances Hodgson Burnett. It tells about two distinct lives of a rich-family girl, Sara, before and after her father’s death.

This time, A Little Princess was dramatized in an all-new musical style. The music, working in concert with drama and dance, drove on the plot. There were altogether 66 pieces of music, of which 30 or so were songs performed by the actors and actresses. Multiple music elements such as street jazz, popular Mumbai tunes, English ballads and French songs, were mingled together. Varied ways of singing, i.e., solo, duet, trio and chorus were staged in alteration. Professional and challenging musical expressions were put into play, including variation of modes and modulation. As a bold attempt in this play, tap dance went on stage for the first time at CNTC.
