Introduction
The China Folk Literature and Art Association (CFLAA) was established in 1950. Originally known as the Research Institute of Chinese Folk Literature and Art of China, it adopted its current name in 1987. China Folk Literature and Art Association is a professional mass organization under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, uniting folk literature and art artists from all ethnic groups across the nation. Serving as a bridge and link between the CPC, the government and the folk literature and art circles, it is an important force in the prosperity and development of socialist literature and art, and in building a strong socialist cultural nation.
CFLAA implements CPC’s policies on literature and art, adhering to a people-centered work and creative orientation. It centers on the key tasks, serves the overall situation, and actively fulfills its basic functions of uniting and guiding, liaison and coordination, service management, and self-discipline and rights protection. The association organizes various folk literature and art activities, including award evaluations, festivals, exhibitions, performances, member training, academic seminars, voluntary services, and international exchanges. Dedicated to the prosperity and development of China's folk literature and art, CFLAA strives to become a warm home for the vast number of folk artists.
CFLAA follows a membership system comprising both group and individual members. Currently, it has 32 group members, including the folk literature and art associations of all provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. The highest authority of CFLAA is the National Congress, which elects a council. The council then elects one president and several vice presidents to form a presidium. The presidium appoints one secretary-general and several deputy secretary-generals. During the adjournment of the National Congress, the council executes the resolutions of the congress. During the adjournment of the council, the presidium executes the resolutions of the congress and the council. The executive vice president presides over the association’s daily operations. The National Congress of CFLAA is held every five years.
Since its establishment, CFLAA has organized the excavation and collation of folk literature from various ethnic groups, especially the national epics such as Gesar, Manas, Janger, and King Yalu and has carried out large-scale national collection activities and protection on folk literature, art, and culture on multiple occasions. CFLAA has edited and published the China Folk Collection, Chinese Proverb Collection and Chinese Ballad Collection (These works, collectively known as the “Three Collections of Chinese Folk Literature”, have been hailed as the "Classic of the Century" and the "Great Wall of Culture").
Since the 21st century, CFLAA has led the China Folk Cultural Heritage Rescue Project. This project has carried out scientific and systematic efforts to rescue and protectcultural heritages such as New Year woodblock paintings, paper-cutting, Thangka, blue calico, ethnic costumes, and traditional villages.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, folk literature and art have flourished. The association has led the folk art and literature community in promoting the integration of "cultivating people" with artistic creation and research. It has also launched the "Shanhua Talent" cultivation program to continuously strengthen talent development. CFLAA now has over 17,000 members, among whom more than 10,000 are from the new art groups.
Since the beginning of the new era, CFLAA has organized and implemented the Chinese Folk Literature Series Publishing Project and the Chinese Folk Art Inheritance and Dissemination Project, and has deeply advanced the Chinese Folk Cultural Heritage Rescue Project. CFLAA has solidly carried out the selection process for the Chinese Folk Art Shanhua Award (currently in its 17th cycle), fostering the creation of high-quality folk art and literature. CFLAA has held the China Folk Art Festival for fourteen consecutive sessions, and has launched a series of flagship activities such as "Our Festivals" and "Folk Culture Enters Campus", aimed at preserving and promoting excellent traditional culture while enriching the spiritual and cultural lives of the public.
The main publications of CFLAA include the monthly Folk Literature, and the bimonthly Folk Culture Forum and Folk Art, which serves as key platforms for disseminating academic ideas and advancing the construction of related disciplines.
